Our commitment
We built this site aiming for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That's the standard most commonly referenced in the United States for public-facing websites.
What that means in practice
- Pages are built with standard HTML headings, lists and landmarks so screen readers can move through them in a sensible order
- Everything you can do with a mouse can be done with a keyboard, and the focused item is always visibly outlined
- A "skip to content" link at the top of every page lets you jump past the navigation
- Text and background colours were chosen for contrast, and text is never the only way information is conveyed
- Images that carry meaning have text alternatives; decorative images are hidden from screen readers
- The layout reflows on small screens and when text is enlarged, without losing content
- Animation and smooth scrolling switch off for anyone whose device requests reduced motion
Where we may fall short
We aim for Level AA but we don't claim the site is perfect. Accessibility is something you maintain, not something you finish. New content, third party tools and browser changes can all introduce problems we haven't caught yet. If you find one, it's a bug and we want to know.
